Question

Pasting crop onto a different raw image, not working

Here's what I want to do:

A few times a year I need to be able to copy and paste the same crop parameters from an image processed in Camera Raw onto another raw image so they are cropped and tilted identically. This is helpful when I have two images shot from a tripod with different lighting and I need to composite. Having them cropped and tilted identically makes lining them up easy.

My workflow is to open my raw NEF files in ACR and make the crops/tilts there and do color and contrast adjustments. I then open the raw files as Smart Objects in PS and do further work in PS.

What's not working:

Maybe I dreamed this? But I thought I had a solution last year by opening Bridge and copying all parameters from one raw file processed in ACR and pasting those parameters onto another. I was able to check the box for "crop" to include this as pasted data.

I tried this method this week, but the thumb image in Bridge didn't visibly show the crop. In fact, the adjustments I made in ACR weren't even reflected for that file. The parameters I saw were either something preliminary I did or are for some different file. Somehow the association between the raw image file and the XMP was broken.

What I tried:

So I figured I could export the XMP parameters from ACR to load up for the other file but export doesn't seem to include crop data!

When the image is opened in PS (as Smart Object), and I look in File Info, I can see the crop and tilt parameters from ACR. But there is no way to export this data from Photoshop. PS has all the parameters I need but I have no way to paste them onto a new raw file.

I reinstalled ACR, but the XMP data is still not associating correctly with the file in Bridge, and I still can't find a way to copy and paste crop parameters. So, I'm stuck. I was manually able to dial in the exact tilt angle (I got that from File Info), but there was no way for me to replicate the cropping.

1. I need to fix the file association problem in Bridge. I researched this but the possible solutions didn't work for me (reinstall ACR, reset workspace, restart machine, check permissions, etc).

2. Is it correct that an export of parameters from ACR will never include crop data?

Thanks for any thoughts. I'm running:

CS6 13.0.6, and no plans to upgrade

ACR 9.1.1

Mac Sierra 10.12

You will probably still need an extra step - after you crop your image in ACR, simply close it. Then you can re-open in PS to make changes. Your crop should save at this step. That's the best I've got for you.

I think it's not working because you are making adjustments in Photoshop and not sticking to just ACR. If you make adjustments in ACR only, close your image, then you can copy and paste. If you are making adjustments in PS, you must be saving the images as something else... those adjustments can't be saved to the raw file.

It makes sense that I can't export any actions performed in Photoshop. But the cropping on my file was performed in ACR. And since I'm able to go back and forth into ACR from Photoshop (since my file is a Smart Object) and make new adjustments, and since I can save and export all the settings except crop from ACR on this file, it seems like there should be a way to also get access to the ACR crop adjustment in addition to the white balance balance adjustment, etc. It's baffling that everything except crop exports.

In Bridge, right click on the cropped image and choose develop setting  - copy settings. Right click on image to crop and choose develop settings - paste settings. Crop should be in there.

In Bridge, my image thumbnail shows as uncropped, when in fact it is cropped. So pasting incorrect data won't help me any. Though I did try it, and not surprisingly, the crop that Bridge does not show in the source file does not paste onto the target file.

I still can't find a way to copy and paste crop parameters.

I think that works when synchronising images.

I reinstalled ACR, but the XMP data is still not associating correctly with the file in Bridge,

Did you change the name of the XMP file to match the name of the file you want to transfer the setting to?

Anyway, you might also want to post over on the Camera Raw Forum.

Yes, synchronizing images would be another good way to do it.

But you can see from the shots below that while PS can see my correct ACR adjustments, Bridge is reading an XMP file with incorrect data because it has none of my adjustments. If I open the two NEFs to synchronize them, ACR is reading the faulty XMP file, so my crop doesn't show up.

It's only when I open my Photoshop file, and then open the NEF Smart Object in ACR that the correct adjustment are shown.

I checked the file names for the base image and the XMP file, and they do match. So Photoshop is seeing my adjustments correctly, and because my NEF is opened as a Smart Object, I can reopen ACR to change my adjustments. But there seems to be no way to export those correct adjustments to replace the faulty XMP file.

Bridge shows incorrect adjustments to my NEF file:

If I double click the NEF file, ACR opens and shows this as my adjustments, also incorrect:

If I open the Photoshop file which contains the Smart Object of the adjustment NEF, I can reopen ACR by double clicking on the NEF Smart Object. This does show the correct adjustments (which includes the crop, not shown):

You can see the adjustments don't match at all. So Photoshop is using the correct ACR adjustments to this raw file but there is no way to get the adjustments exported from Photoshop that I can find. Exporting from ACR does not include crop adjustments. That's why I'm stuck.

I don't see a forum for ACR. Could you provide me a link to that?
