Pathing Complications

I have a troubleshooting problem on pathing.

I have one closed path saved and have created another closed path on the same path but cannot save nor select it to create a work path>saved path. This was a error on my part. Wondering if there is some magic I can do to salvage the situation. See the image below on "Centuries Right" path:

Goal: Select the black outline (not sure what it's technically called) and create a separate path.

note: The path activates but when I try to select it (dancing ants) it only selects the saved path (white shape) on the left.

Thanks in advance!

If you are getting marching ants then you are using the wrong tool. The tool you want is the Path Selection tool "A" (black arrow) to select paths and subpaths. (If you need to select the anchor points, use the Direct Selection tool "A" (white arrow).) Both tools share space and the shortcut by default.

I think you are saying you want to move a subpath from one path to a new work path:

  • Path Selection tool > Select subpath
  • Cut
  • Deselect all paths (or select desired path)
  • Paste

If you meant something else, please clarify.

@defaulttsrdfoy90x5f

the black outline (not sure what it's technically called)

I forgot to address this part:

Paths: you have three named paths in your screenshot

Subpaths: if there is more than one shape (closed or open) on a path, they are subpaths

If you select a path in the Paths panel, it includes all of the subpaths. If, for instance, you fill or stroke the path on a new layer, it happens to the entire path. The panel menu says Stroke Path and Fill Path.

If you select a subpath with the Path Selection tool and look in the panel, the commands now refer to subpath.

Can you include the Path in a jpg (just a color field) and post it here?

Otherwise select the »non-selecting« subPathItem and post a screenshot including ALL pertinent UI elements, in particular the Options Bar.

What is its Path Operation?
