Pattern Overlay

Question

Hi, I am working with an image of a church and its parking lot. I have crudely selected the asphalt parking lot and created a layer for it using the pen tool. Using another image, I selected a piece of asphalt where the texture is appealing to me. I created a pattern texture and I am wanting to use it to transform the parking lot of the church. The goal is to place the pattern only over the layer for the parking lot I created and to make it blend with the rest of the photo in regards to the brightness and range of colors of the overall image.

I initially used the pattern overlay from the layer styles of the parking lot to add this asphalt pattern and it looked okay, but the pattern did not cover the parking lot completely. I raised the scale and it created more than one pattern that did not fit well together at all. This is where that led me:

This could feasibly work if I could stretch the pattern to cover all of the parking lot and decrease the opacity. How can I proceed from this point?

Also, would there have been a more effective approach I could have taken from the beginning? Thanks!!

HiI would approach that by using a "tileable" asphalt image. You will find these on many sites designed for 3D use. That way, when the pattern is repeated you don't have a light and dark area coming together as in your example forming a harsh transition. Instead both the shade and the patterning will tile seamlessley.The tile usually will come as a square from directly above so it is just a matter of filling an area with the repeating pattern then using transform distort/transform perspective to drag the area into shape, to fit with your image, before matching up the lighting and any shadows/reflections.Dave
