Pen Tool Changes To Control Tool...Randomly? [2019]

Appologies if this turn out to be a user missuse of hardware problem rather than a Ps problem.

I'll just bedrawing along quite happily (I'm using a Microsoft surface Studio with a touch screen) when all of a sudden the pen tool will switch and become the control tool.  Its always the pen tool and always the control tool.  The only way to switch it back is to reselect the pen tool, and sometimes that doesn't work.  Before you suggest that I'm clicking the button on the side of the physical pen accidentaly, I'm not.

Any guesses, thoughts, help, greatly appreciated.

I'm experiencing the same issue, and it's DRIVING ME UP THE WALL. I'd love to know if you ever found a way to fix it, because I'm going insane.

Are you pressing P to select it? It cycles through the tools if you press the letter assigned to the tool. I had the same with the lasso tool. Everytime I pressed L it would be the wrong one. You could try turning on 'Use shift key for tool switch' in preferences - tools so you have to hold shift + the tools letter to select the next tool in the flyout menu.

“The pen tool will switch and become the control tool.”

Can you clarify what is happening? There is a Control key on the keyboard and a Move tool in the Tools panel, plus the black arrow Selection tool and the white arrow Direct Selection tool, but there is not a tool called the “Control tool”.

It’s okay if you are not using the proper terms, but please clarify so we know what is actually happening.
