Pen tool with permanent asterisk in Photoshop

Question

Somehow the pen tool seems messed up in photoshop CS6. It now shows a permanent asterisk, regardless of whether I start a new path or work on an existing path. The delete/add anchor point symbol doesn´t show up when I hold it over an existing path. Any ideas what to do abou it?

BTW: Caps lock is not inadvertantly pressed.

Caps lock would only change the pen tool cursor which ever pen cursor is current to a cross hair cursor. When cross hair cursor is over a pen line it should change to the pen add point cursor and over a control point change the the pen delete point cursor.

Have you tried to reset the pen tool, resetting all tools and resetting your preferences in CS6?
