Question

Photo to Oil Painting has outlines? Why?

Hey, I'm working on this picture of a friend of mine, turning it into an oil painting. I'm new to Photoshop, and I can't figure out why I have outlines, which appear to be separating the colors, or how to get rid of them.

Hi

We need to see your settings to better advise. When you are using a Filter in PS, it's a best practice to make the layer a Smart Object first, so you can double-click the filter to see your settings and to make changes. If you didn't make a SO, you might want to start again. Otherwise, show the settings in the oil paint dialog.

Oh, wow... I was using a tutorial video for my project (like I said, I'm new to Photoshop). No video I've watched said anything about turning the image into a smart object. Thanks for the help. I'll come back later if I still need help.

Hi

When you make a SO before adding a filter, it is non-destructive editing. If you look at my screenshot:

  • double-click the oil paint filter to edit it
  • click the eyeball to hide it
  • select it and click the trash can to delete it

This should get you started:
