Photoshop 20.0.6 no longer opens files with a double-click - macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

Hi there

When I double-click on a file that should open in Photoshop, it goes through the motions, but doesn't actually open the file. I have to do File...Open.

Please note the file association is not broken. It still says "Open with... Photoshop" as the default. And I reset that association just to be sure. I've also restarted.

See the video attached. You can see when I double-click the file on the desk top, it "expands" like it's opening... but no file actually opens. There's nothing in the Layers palette, and there is nothing to Close. But when I do a File...Open for the same file, it opens fine. This has never been an issue until a few days ago it seems.

I am running High Sierra 10.13.6 on a mid-2017 MB Pro. My Creative Cloud is up-to-date, and it looks like I am running PS 20.0.6.

FYI problem resolved with latest OS update. Should have done that first. Sorry!

I have the same problem running Catalina 10.15.3, Photoshop 21.0.3.

It once was fixed by editing the Accessibility List?

Now, three days later, I again can't open files with double-click

10.13.6 was the latest High Sierra update, so I thought you had something that depended on it and did not think to ask about upgrading to 10.14.6.

Anyway, what's important is your problem is solved. 🙂

Sorry to hear this. At this point I have not found out why your double-click does not work and offering anymore workarounds might do more harm than good. I know Adobe's tech Support can be a waiting game, but they may have something and are able to access your Mac with permission. So start here:

Have you tried adding Photoshop to the Accessibility List?

Thank you - that did not work. No other apps are listed there for me except Dropbox (unchecked) and OnyX, and other apps (both within Creative Suite and others) open fine with a double click. This seems to be exclusively related to Photoshop. Some days I miss the old Extension Manager!

I would suggest an uninstall/reinstall from the Creative Cloud Desktop app.

Thanks for that suggestion but unfortunately it didn't work. Same error message, same inability to open with a double click.

Hi Chuck,

Welcome to the Adobe Community!

As the image does not open in Photoshop when you double click on it, could you please let us know does it only happen with one specific format or all documents?

Are you able to open PSD files by double clicking on them?

You may try resetting the preferences of Photoshop and see if it helps: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Note: Make sure that you back up all your custom presets, brushes and actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences. Migrate presets, actions, and settings

Regards,
Sahil

PNGs do not work. JPGs do not work. PSDs do not work.

I checked Illustrator and it works. So does Indesign. That's about all I work in mostly.

I will try resetting the prefs.
