Photoshop 2020 Failing to Save files into Lightroom Classic - macOS

Hello,

Any thoughts or help welcome -

The issue- failing to save files from photoshop back into Lightroom (where they were before being brought into photoshop). And this only happens sometimes...sometimes photoshop properly saves and does bring the image back into Lightroom. Infact, I called adobe support and the support agent had no issues saving from photoshop at the time I called but 15 min after the phone call it happens again...

Some basic info of what I'm using-

IMac OS Catalina (updated)

RAW and HDR images stored (and working from) on a Lacie D2 6TB external hard drive

Lightroom Classic (updated)

photoshop 2020 (updated)

any reason photoshop is sometimes failing randomly? It's very discouraging to work on a image for 5 minutes only for photoshop to randomly freeze when you go to merge layers and save. My only option is to force quit photoshop and try again. 😞

Again any help is appreciated.

Hi Austin,

That should not be happening, as Photoshop is not able to send files back to Lightroom, could you please try resetting the preferences of both Photoshop and Lightroom and let us know if it helps?

Preferences Reset Article Photoshop - https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Preferences Reset Article Lightroom - https://helpx.adobe.com/in/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

Note: Make sure that you back up all your custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences. Migrate presets, actions, and settings

Thanks for the help, Sahil. I'll give it a go by doing a preferences reset on photoshop.

And for clarification I'll attach a youtube video to demostrate what I mean by saving a file back into Lightroom from Photoshop.

^ Skip to 11:19 mark. This is just an example of what it should do correctly when taking a photo from Lightroom, edit in photoshop and then save it back into Lightroom.

So it’s failing to save because it’s freezing? Need more detials, not clear on the steps here.

Try trashing your Photoshop preferences. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

This action only affects the items found in the preferences dialog box. Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop Preferences file, including general display options, file-saving options, performance options, cursor options, transparency options, type options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Brushes (and lots of other setting) are not affected by the above instructions for deleting preferences. You may wish to make a screen capture of the settings in the Preferences dialog to reset them prior to deleting of this file.

Hello, thedigitaldog

Photoshop freezes sometimes after pressing command + S will stop at 99%.

I'll be sure to reset Photoshop program settings and try that. All scratch disks and the like should be fairly empty as I just installed Photoshop and Lightroom yesterday. This has all just started on this brand new 2019 IMac I unboxed yesterday. Have never had this problem on my 2017 Macbook Pro.
