Photoshop 2021 all versions of 22.x (including 22.4) hard crash Windows and causes computer reboot

I've tested all Photoshop 2021 versions 22.x, including the latest 22.4, and they all cause Windows to hard crash the system.   Turning off the GPU performance switch doesn't change anything.   Crash occurs upon simply opening an image file of any kind.    Finally reverted to 21.2.8 (last Photoshop 2020 version) and it works fine.    I see lots of other posts of people complaining about Photoshop 2021 crashing on both Mac and Windows, how is Adobe releasing such a broken and obviously untested product?

    Hello, Photoshop 22 uses the GPU in a different way than before, and it can crash because of issues with the GPU driver.

    Please try to disable native GPU acceleration in the Edit>Preferences>technology preview, or use the legacy option in the Edit>Preferences>Performance in older 22.x versions, to see if you experience the crash.

     

    BUT: make sure to update your GPU driver,

     

    Also, post the contents of help>system info, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date and version of the GPU driver, etc.

     

    Some machines also switch automatically the GPU between the onboard and the additional one.

    I am investigating changing "Drawing Mode" to "Basic" in Graphics Processor Settings. If that doesn't stop crashes on Photoshop start-up (and I had one just as I was launching it to check current settings) I will see what happens if I un-check "Use Graphics Processor". I don't have an option to disable native GPU acceleration in the Edit>Preferences>technology preview.

    I keep Photoshop up-to-date so I believe what I'm using is the current Windows version (22.4.2)

      Reverting to  21.2.9 solved the issue for me. I couldnt save, Windows hard rebooted everytime.

      Photoshop has become unreliable (occasional crashes) on my Windows 10 64 system since the 22.x updates, but since 22.4 it's become effectively useless. It crashes most often when I use the move tool to drag a layer from one file into another, but the crashes aren't confined to that.

       

      I've been using Photoshop since ver. 2.5 (back in 1993) and I have to say the problems I've encountered with 22.x and in particular 22.4 have been the worst.

        Try trashing your Photoshop preferences. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

         

        (Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

         

        This action only affects the items found in the preferences dialog box. Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop Preferences file, including general display options, file-saving options, performance options, cursor options, transparency options, type options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Brushes (and lots of other setting) are not affected by the above instructions for deleting preferences. You may wish to make a screen capture of the settings in the Preferences dialog to reset them prior to deleting of this file.

        The thing is that I have had no crashing / freezing problems for years using Photoshop. The previous version which I re-installed also works fine. I think I will wait for another version to install since I'm guessing that others are having the same problem.

        I got a crash after opening a jpeg file while a tiff file was open.
        Crashed again simply while panning in zoom... (used to get a hang when doing that and you could save the file) Now it is a hard crash and all is lost. Rolled back one version immediatly. 2 crashes in 20 minutes.
