Photoshop 2022 Froze And Now Will Not Launch

I'm on a Mac running Catalina 10.15.7

I use PS almost daily. Today it suddenlystopped responding. I forced it to quit but it would not re-launch.

I then did a complete shutdown of my system (not just a restart) and brought it back up. But PS still will not launch. When I click on the icon in the dock, nothing happens. If I control-click on the icon, I have the option to Force Quit. But even that does nothing.

I searched for an answer but didn't find anything. Hoping someone here can help. Thank you.

At this point HD space may not matter - its not the only issue.

The graphics cards that came with 27" late 2012 iMacs do not meet minimum system requirements for current Photoshop builds.

The minimum VRAM is 1.5/2 GB min (recommended is 4 GB) and your card has 512 MB.

The rcommended minimum speed is 2,000 ops/sec and your card clocks in at 931.

Current Photoshop builds will not run effectively on this system.

You have two options: contact Adobe Support for an earlier (CC2020 or earlier) install version or upgrade your Mac.

Apple has stopped supporting Catalina and Adobe is no longer supplying new versions of Photoshop that run on it. Older versions should be ok but as you found, having free disk space is always important. You can get a 4TB USB hard drive for around US$100 or so, that will help you free up space and backup important files.

I'd start thinking about getting a newer computer. I sold my 2015 iMac and got an M1 Mac mini for US$800 which is much faster and supported by Apple.

Thanks for your reply Lumigraphics.

I have actually been eyeing an M1 Mac Mini for a while now. Does yours have 8gb or 16gb RAM? And in your opinion does it make a significant difference in performance? I have read that RAM is less important because of the way the M1 system is architected.

What are your computer specs?

  • What Mac version?
  • How much HD space is available?
  • How much RAM total is installed?

Kevin, thanks for the reply.

This is a Late 2012 27" iMac. 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

500gb HD with 41gb available. 32gb RAM.

Maybe I need more HD room?
