Photoshop 21.0.2 Starting to get a Disk Error with Linked Objects (Mac/GDFS) macOS Catalina 10.15.2

Recently we have been getting Disk Errors with Linked Objects that are open at the same time as the file they are linked to. This is what we're running:

MacOS Catalina 10.15.2 (19C57)

Google Drive File Stream 35.0.13.0

Photoshop 21.0.2

If the Linked File is placed in a regular folder, outside of Google Drive File Stream, everything seems to be working fine.

We never had the problem with any of the older versions. 😕😕

Thanks for any help!

I have been dealing with similar problems with smart objects and I suspect its primarily Catalina with all their changed security updates that's creating the problem. Any time I work with a PSD file that links to smart objects on our servers it gives me error messages like "cannot replace smart objects" or "cannot complete image size command"... "because of a disk error".

What I have to do currently is relink my smart objects in the file - sometimes just relinking one is enough. Sometimes I have to relink several. And the real pain is that I have to relink each item TWICE because it errors out on me the first time I try to relink.

I don't know if this is something Adobe can work to circumvent with new updates working around how Catalina functions within networks. It would be nice.

Note - I do have my MacOS security settings set to allow my Adobe programs full disk access, but I imagine that "full disk access" relates to the individual computer's hard drive - not necessarily network drives. 😕😕

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the disk error, we recommend using Photoshop and Adobe Bridge on a local hard disk. It's difficult to re-create or accurately identify network- and peripheral-configuration problems. When you save and open files across a network or from removable media, many variables affect application performance. Therefore, some problems occur more frequently when you work across a network or from removable media than from a local hard disk. (Network-related problems include damaged files, denied access, or slow performance.)

Please have a look at this article for more information. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/networks-removable-media-photoshop.html

Thanks Sahil.

I understand what you're saying, but everything used to work fine. Additionally, Google Drive File Stream stores a local copy of the file on my computer. So I am actually working with a local file.

Having to move files around just to avoid using GDFS would result in considerable more work. We would really like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks! ~ Kai
