Photoshop 22.0.1 requires to be “force quit” after running a while on Mac

Running Photoshop 22.0.1 and it won’t shut down using Quit. The wheel just spins. I actually notice this with Illustrator, too, sometimes. Is anyone else noticing this? Do I need to reinstall or is it a permissions thing? It isn’t always, just after it’s been open for longer than maybe 10–20 minutes.

This problem has been persistent since at least a couple of years, judging from prior threads.

I'm running PS 22.5.1 on a Mac with OS Catalina 10.15.7. I have to force quit PS Every Time I want to close the program.  It's ridiculous.

Are you using the Watercolor action that hangs in 22.0 and 22.0.1.  Does something you do in PS seem to cause the Hang?  If you open Photoshop and do nothing for a few minutes then  try to do something in photoshop its hung.  Or does Photoshop not fully open it hangs starting. If it starts can you stop Photoshop it  as the first operation.  When or How does Photoshop hang on you.

Corrupt Preferences can cause strange things. Photoshop may hang starting or crash or nor operate correctly perhaps not shut down. Resting preferences is always worth a try.

No, it is not hanging per se. It is just as I described it. No files are open. I just try to quit the program and it always hangs, requiring Force Quit.

If its does not shut down its hung shuting down.  That why you need have your system terminiate it. If you can start Photoshop then try shutting it down it hangs, Try resetting the prefences or delete you preferebces have photoshop build a fresh set of prefernces.  Also read over the know Adobe issues for 2021 https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#ps-desktop

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop. Would you mind telling us which macOS version are you working on? Do you experience the slow down while performing a certain task?

You can try optimizing the preferences of Photoshop using the steps suggested here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-photoshop-cc-performance.html

If the issue persists, you can try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps mentioned here: https://adobe.ly/2Qzc0K3

Please backup your settings prior to resetting the preferences. You can check: https://adobe.ly/2vNz6FG

Let us know how it goes!

Regards,

Nikunj

Everything is up-to-date, macOS 11.0.1 — I don’t understand what changing Photoshop preferences will do to ensure the program correctly shuts down.

Thanks for the info! As JJMack suggested, corrupt preferneces can cause issues with the app & resetting the preferences may help.

Since you're working on macOS Big Sur, please go to the System Preferences for your Mac, then Security and Privacy, then select the Privacy tab. Then select Accessibility from the list to the left and check if you see Photoshop added to the list with a check mark in front of it. If Photoshop is not a part of the list, please add it by unlocking the window first using the lock at the bottom left, then clicking the + icon and navigating to the Applications folder. Also, grant permissions to Photoshop under Full disk access located in the same list as Accessibility. Once done, restart the Mac and check if it helps.
