Photoshop 23 hangs while loading PNG files

Photoshop v. 23.0
Lenovo ThinkCentre m93 with i5 processor, 16 GB RAM, Win10 Pro 21H1, Intel HD Graphics 4600
PNG files are approx 10 MB apiece. 

Spinning cursor just spins and spins. Task Manager shows that Photoshop has crashed.

This cleared up when I toggled the Technology Previews:Deactivate Native Canvas preference setting to ON, and then back to OFF.
