Question

Photoshop and Lightroom with new Macmini M1

Hi,

I've recently copied all my content from my old Macbook Pro over to a new MacMini M1. This included Photoshop 2022 and Lightroom Classic,( both up to date), plus all the associated plugins I use with these applications.I transferred the content via a timemachine backup from an external drive during the MacMini setup process.

I was not prompted to download Rosetta to open lightroom. I was prompted to download Rosetta to be able to open Photoshop. ( This in itself confused me as I understood both ran natively on M1 machines now).

Both Photoshop and Lightroom seem to be working although, some plugins, eg, the original Nik collection, aren't running smoothly as they were before.

I read I should be able to open the "get info "screen for Photoshop and Lightroom and see check boxes to enable and disable Rosetta as well as seeing other infomation. I can't see any of that on my M1 machine,(see attachments. Why next to "kind" is folder shown? I read it should be "universal or intel or something.

I that normal? Have I somehow transferred across compromised versions of Photoshop and Lightroom which may not utilize the M1 chip ideally? As mentioned, all the programmes were up to date when transferred across and are current and up to date on the new machine.

I'd just like to know that all the programmes are working optimally, because, at present, I have no idea.

Sorry for the rant.

James

It may be time to reinstall Photoshop.

Its recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

I hope this helps

thanks Neil,

last night I uninstalled and reinstalled both lightroom and Photoshop saving preferences. Went smoothly. I didn't know about the cleaner tool but the applications seem to be working fine and are both working in universal mode now with the rosetta option available. Thanks to all for you helpful input.

When upgrading across hardware changes like Intel to M1, restoring from a Time Machine backup is fine for documents and settings, but for applications, it’s strongly recommended that you reinstall to make sure you get the correct code for the hardware you’re on now. That’s not just for Adobe software, that’s for software from any source.

Thanks Conrad C,

that's exactly what I was thinking from what I have read recently. It's good to have you confirm. It's interesting that lightroom appeared to migrate across in "univesal" ok, but photoshop migrated in "intel" mode with the time machine restore. Anyway, I'll make sue I read up on the correct uninstall/reinstall method for Photoshop so to hopefully keep my plugins and workspaces intact.

It's not the Photoshop Folder, but the Photoshop App inside the folder that you  must run Cmd i on.

(I'm using an Intel Mac and MacOS 10.15.7, so I can't show you a M1 screenshot)

Thanks gener7,

that's got me a little further, (See Screen shots). So why would Photoshop show intel and lightroom show universal? They are both updated. Any ideas?

Which plugins are you using with Photoshop?

Intel-based plugins need Photoshop using Rosetta.
