Question

Photoshop Brush Tool only makes large straight lines

Hello all - had anyone had issues with Photoshop tools - specifically brushes - behaving as if stuck in SHIFT mode? When I choose the tool and left click on the image to begin painting on a mask, etc the "paint" goes across the image in a wide line instead of remaining constrained to the area that I am painting in. It behaves like I'm trying to paint a straight line by holding shift, but I'm NOT. I've spent 3 days on the line with Adobe, uninstalled and reinstalled CC and all apps and still no fix. This only happens in PS - everything behaves normal in LRC and other apps. It's incredibly frustrating because there's no work around... the program is useless like this. Have any of you had this issue or heard of it, and have a possible fix? I'm using Windows 10 on the HP Spectre x360.  I have attached a video clip of what is happening. Thank you for any recommendations!

Are you using a wacom tablet? This seems to be a common problem showing up here in the forums.

No, I wasn't using the Wacom. That did seem to be the only common thread among people with this issue.

I hope you were able to solve this, because I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM and so far I haven't found an answer that seems relevant. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough of the time to be incredibly frustrating. All I've been able to find out from an earlier thread with a similar problem is it might be the Wacom tablet. But, as you've said, nobody knows how to fix it.

I'm sorry we're sharing this issue. I really hope you could work it out.

Actually, I had to completely wipe my computer, then contact Adobe for an earlier install version of Photoshop before it stopped. I was told that it was an issue with Microsoft updates, then that my graphics card wasn't adequate despite having Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics on the laptop. I also replaced my mouse and keyboard. It has been INCREDIBLY frustrating, mostly because I was just being passed from department to department instead of anyone trying to solve the problem. In the end I reached an Adobe representative that was aware of the issue, but said that they were "still working on it." But from what I can tell by reading posts in various forums, this has been an issue since 2019. I hope that you were able to find a fix that wotrks for you - it backed my work up for 3 weeks.
