Question

Photoshop can no longer open files from our server

After updating to Catalina, Photoshop will no longer allow me to open files that are saved on our shared server. The message I get is "Could not complete your request because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to a different file or duplicate it in the Finder." The file is not locked, and I've never had issues with permissions before. indesign and illustrator can still open files from the server. Photoshop will open local files. I've unistalled and reinstalled photoshop, and I have updated all of my software.

I have the same problem (MacOS Monterey and Photoshop 23.1.1) and I worked in agencies for 15 years, same workflow everywhere. This problem is a bug and working locally is not a realistic option for 90% of agencies. Please, solve it.

Have you found a fix for this?

The solution remains the same as it has always been. If you want to prevent data loss, then save to your hard disk first, then transfer the file to the network drive. There are too many variables on networks and this is the only always-safe way. Read through the thread and links for details.

I can only repeat what Lumigraphics said above. Working directly off server is just risky, unreliable and asking for trouble. There is no "fix". It has never been supported by Adobe.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/networks-removable-media-photoshop.html

"Multiple factors affect data transmission over a network, including file servers, routers, bridges, network cards, software, cables, connectors, power cables, and power supplies. Network connections can suddenly become unavailable, increasing the risk of data loss and application errors (...) Technical Support strongly recommends working in Photoshop directly on the local hard disk. To prevent data loss, save files to your hard disk first. Then transfer them to the network or removable drive in the Finder or in Windows Explorer."

People in offices around the world largely get away with this because they're working with Word or Excel files of a few kilobytes. So the bad habit spreads and becomes the accepted norm. But a Photoshop file is a monster in comparison, and it's just that much more likely that any one given file will be hit by a problem.

Do not work directly off a server. Period. Adobe doesn't support it and there are a bunch of operating system variables involved that will cause you pain. Copy files to the local drive and back when finished.

as others have said, there's some compatibility issues linked to Catalina.  Hopefully a fix will be made soon.

Until a resolution is found, copy the file to your hard drive work on the file there, and copy back to server when done. Or roll back to a stable system High Sierra.

Can you log in as Admin in users & groups and test if that help, and run disk utility to fix permissions.

You really needed to read this before upgrading to Catalina.

There are a number of serious issues with compatibility currently that can cause this.
