Photoshop cannot use input ICC profiles (scanner and camera)

Issue: Photoshop can't Assign 'input' type ICC profiles - profiles which have worked fine with earlier PS versions

Adobe Photoshop Version: 25.2.0 20231121.r.196 12a6c2a arm64
macOS Ventura 13.5

open an RGB image

Go to edit / Assign profile 

choose a scanner profile 

Photoshop gives an error: "Could not complete the Assign Profile command because the ICC profile is invalid.”

 

Expected result: Photoshop should Assign the ICC profile to the frontmost image
Actual result: Photoshop refuses with an error message 

Profiles I tested have LAB PCS

 

I can provide an example to test but cannot upload an ICC profile via this interface it seems (unsupported filetype)

    @brianpeart Hi Brian I think you just confirmed that the 25.1 inability to open your Nikon RAWs has not resurfaced after reinstalling it. That’s would be a blessing.

    I have exactly the same problem with the ICC profile being 'Invalid'. It was okay yesterday. I have tried resetting profiles and even made a new ICC profile in case either was corrupt, but no change, still 'Invalid'.

    A user on the PS forum suggested downgrading to v25.1 which I have done, and this version works with the profile, but I had another problem with this version when it suddenly decided that Nikon Camer Raw files were Invalid and it refused to open them. In that case upgrading to v25.2 solved that problem.

    So I'm stuck - v25.1 doesn't work with the NEF files, but it does apply ICC profiles, while v25.2 opens NEF files but won't take an ICC profile. A rock and a hard place...
