Question

Photoshop causing computer to restart

For about a week now, whenever I use Photoshop on my laptop it causes the entire laptop to crash and then I get a 'your computer has restarted due to a problem' page before it starts up again. It only ever happens when I'm using PS or have it open so I believe this is the source of the issue, one way or another. Sometimes it'll only be a minute or two before it crashes, sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes a few hours into using it, so it's wildly inconsistent and very frustrating.

I have a Macbook that's been updated to the latest version of Mojave and Photoshop CC which is also updated to the latest version.

Things I have tried so far

- making sure my operating system and the program are both up-to-date

- virus sweep

- uninstalling and re-installing PS

- creating a new user on my computer to 'start fresh'

Any thoughts on why this might be happening and/or solutions to fix it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Did this happen before Mojave or 2019 update???

There have been many issues with Mojave such as Liquify effect leaving black spots, Is a pain to downgrade, but in the end migth be best option

Agree that this also could be a RAM issue. Do a hardware ram test on your mac.

I usually use Command R mentioned at bottom, but the Command D here might be better. You computer may take more than 20 minutes to do ram test (depemds on how much ram you have, and if issues are found) and you need to restart.

I use Windows and it would very unusual for and application crash to cause a reboot.  These usually only happen on Windows machines that do not use ECC Ram.   Most unexpected Windows reboots are cause by  Hardware RAM failures.  Photoshop is a resource hungry Application. It may be the only application you use that requires all of you RAM to be used.   RAM failures are often not solid failures RAM may fail intermittently.   If your Mac does not uses ECC RAM and the failures are random and do not always happen when you use Photoshop.  I would suggest the you run a memory stress test for a long period of time toe make sure you rams is not failing.
