Photoshop CC 2019 Can't NOT proportionally free transform

I know there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people reporting problems with the new default action when it comes to free transform but I seem to be experiencing something slightly different.

Although I've owned Photoshop for many years I've only ever done very basic stuff in it as predominantly I use Lightroom so forgive me if my terminology isn't right or if I'm missing something pretty basic.

So I've got a photo that I've created lots of quick masks for cutting each into a new layer and then converted to smart objects. I now want to use the Transform tool to adjust their size. I do not want to adjust them proportionally I either just want to make them taller or wider.

I know the default action is that you no longer need to hold the shift key down when using the Transform tool to scale things proportionally and that if you DON'T want to scale things proportionally you DO hold down the shift key.

So I enter Transform, I hold down the left shift and I grab the bottom middle dot/control point/thingy and drag down. But the whole thing scales proportionally, it gets wider as well as taller. I try again but don't hold down the shift key, same thing. Huh?

What am I missing?

    Hi

It's working fine for me, you could try resetting Photoshop preferences

Resetting the preferences was indeed the answer. It's now working as it 'should'. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Actually, touching off does not commit, at least on my box. If I click outside the transform area the action is aborted entirely. Same for vectors.

I find that you can get it to proportionally scale, but that the key combinations are different every single time, and you need to keep an eye on the transform values to make sure you are using the right key(s). Touching outside the transform area will abort the transform, dragging corners out for distortions sometimes works, sometimes does not. The thing that kills me, this isn't something that needed to be fixed. Period.

Not quite right. It works one way for vectors and a different way for pixels. Touching away from the area commits , not aborts, the transform.

I do agree though it would be better if it was consistent across all layer types.

I'll try resetting preferences when I get home tonight. I'm using OSX Mojave.

It's just doesn't 'feel' like it's working correctly. For example, if I do hold down shift and resize graphically the resizing is very jerky. It looks like it's going from larger to original size rapidly rather than a smooth enlarging or shrinking.

Photoshop CC 2018 is fine and does exactly what you'd expect.

I have the same problem with smartobjects and shapes.

I am not seeing that here with CC2019 on Windows 10.

If I have a smart object and hold down Shift it scales without the constrained aspect ratio. If I release shift the aspect ratio is constrained.

What operating system are you using

resetting the preferences did the trick for the smart objects but not the vector ones. but thanx for the tip.

Unfortunately ,vector shapes work the other way round so shift constrains - no shift unconstrains. Why the change was implemented in this inconsistent way is beyond me.
