Question

Photoshop change arbitrary the resolution of jpg file

Hello.

I report the following occurrence for analysis.

1- I have a 300 dpi jpg file, saved on my Desktop PC.

2- I opened this file and exported it with another name without changing anything.

3- Photoshop arbitrarily changed the size and changed the resolution to 72dpi

4- This is recurring

So i ask:

Is this fact due to the new version?  From now on it will be like this: to keep the resolution in a jpg file should we use "save as" instead of "export"?

Thanks.

Stephen is right: nothing has changed.

Save For Web had an option to include all metadata, including ppi, but Export never had that. It always stripped the ppi number.

And again - when you reopen this ppi-less file into another application, a default value is assigned by that application. Photoshop will assign 72, most MS applications will assign 96.

In fact, it has changed. Has changed, of course. The "export" did not change the dpi "information". It did not change this metadata. Now change.

Nothing has changed, it has always been this way, there are countless old topics in the forum where it is discussed that Save includes resolution metadata while export removes resolution metadata. It isn't that it has 72ppi resolution, that is just an arbitrary figure when there is no value, some software may display the same file with 96ppi or no resolution value.

I just want to know why the rite changed.  Only that.  It wasn't like that before the update.  I am not proposing a discussion on whether the resolution actually changes.  I am only discussing the form, not the content.

Save, Save As and Save As a Copy retain the resolution metadata.

Export As, Quick Export and Export Save for Web (Legacy) remove this metadata, by design.

You may or may not agree with this design decision which is another topic. People have been suggesting/asking for a checkbox option to include the resolution metadata in exports for a long time now.

This is a pretty common topic, here is a similar recent post:

EDIT: Haha, I didn't realise that the post I was referring you to was your own post!
