Question

Photoshop constantly crashes, even when idle

So I've recently bought a new laptop and installed my usual Adobe cloud programs. The others seem to work fine but every time I try to use Photoshop it crashes within 30 seconds or so. This happens even if i'm not editing, for instance last time it happened I was just looking at the preferences menu and it crashed for no apparent reason. It also crashes with no project loaded and just left idle. I've tried adjusting preferences, making sure it's using my gpu as well as trying it with the gpu disabled, in both cases it crashes. I've also tried reinstalling, I've even tried installing previous versions and the same thing happens. I'm running out of ideas on how to fix this issue.

My new laptop is well within the requirements:

Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™ i7 Six Core Processor 8750H (2.2GHz, 4.1GHz Turbo)

Memory (RAM) 16GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 16GB)

Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 - 4.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1

Windows 10

All drivers are up to date

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello

To all of you experiencing crashes after a few seconds (or minutes) when using ANY CC application (Seen on PS, LR classic, PPro...), I suggest you try the following solution that worked for me (after MANY tinkerings with updates, drivers...)

Even though my active GPU was Nvidia, the fix was to upgrade the INTEL drivers. I know this sounds strange.

I was @ version 24.xxx   and I had to upgrade to 25.xxx

However this is not straightforward : if you just download the new driver and launch exe, in my case, it refused to install because manufacturer drivers were installed (Dell). I had to :

  • Download latest Intel driver from Downloads for Intel® HD Graphics 630  (in my case, since I have HD 630)
  • Unzip the exe in a folder using, for instance, 7zip
  • go to device manager (Windows + X --> device manager)
  • uninstall Intel drivers and click on "Delete driver files"
  • DISCONNECT YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION
  • In the device manager, right-click anywhere and choose "Scan for hardware changes"
  • Wait for the Intel display adapter to appear
  • Right click and choose "Update driver". If it is disabled, click on Properties then Driver then Update driver.
  • Choose "Have disk" and locate the place where you extracted the Intel driver
  • Let it install
  • Renable Internet connection

Hopefully once this is done, your problems are over. They were for me, even though I was using the Nvidia driver!!!! (go figure)

A reboot might be necessary.

Wish you all the best of luck

Thanks for your help JJMack, there was definitely an issue with that corrupt windows file. Since that’s now fixed, I’ve installed an older nvidia driver as I think there’s also a GPU issue. I’ve read many people are having issues with multiple graphic processors and photoshop. So I’ve also decided to disabled the integrated intel graphics from device manager, rather than just choosing the nvidia card in  the nvidia control panel settings. So far it’s not crashed straight away. I’m going to monitor it and then I’ll confirm if it’s fixed it for anyone that’s having similar issues.

Yes Adobe states that Photoshop Has problems when a machine has two different GPU.   That only one type of GPU should be used.

Yeah for some reason the crashes aren’t showing in the reliability monitor anymore.

first scan your windows system with Microsoft system checker to see if it finds any issues with your windows system that it can fix.

I've ran system file checker and the I'm still having the same issue. What can I try next?

you ran "SFC /scannow" as an administrator and it found nothing wrong.  I do not know then why Microsoft's DLL is crashing.

Look for system application crash reports for Photoshop stopped running and post the details in the report.
