Question

Photoshop crashing during save and corrupting

I have been reading about this on the forum but starting a new thread to Adobe takes notice.

Regularly, when working on files for extended periods of time, PS will freeze during save/ autosave. The only way of getting out of it is to force-quit PS. What that does is to corrupt the file. And there is not backup or slightly older version of the file anywhere on my computer.

What I have done, besides hours of my life lost with useless Adobe support:
* reinstalled CC

* yes, reinstalled my entire OS, nuked everything thinking it must be my computer

The behaviour of the software is illogical. WHY ON EARTH would you overwrite an active file on save/ autosave. You should create a copy in the background, and if and ONLY IF the save is successful, delete the previous version of the file.

I'm furious. This needs to get fixed, and FAST!!!

I realize it's a bit much to read all the hundreds (thousands?) of posts we've had about this. It's been an avalanche. But in fact the whole issue is very easy to avoid:

  • Don't save directly to an external drive! Save locally and copy over. That's always been the safe procedure anyway.
  • Format your external drive to APFS, not exFAT.

That's it. None of this was a problem prior to Catalina, but once again Apple changed the rules, and so now it is. Adobe is trying to catch up. I'm not suggesting this isn't a problem that needs to be fixed, but in the meantime you can take simple precautions.

Exact same problem. I literally lost 6+ hours of work today doing and the rescuing my external drive from a non-optional force eject, and repeat that two hours of lost work and hour to resume the external drive three times today, plus redoing the same (saved every 5-10 min) work over and over again because it wouldn't pull the last save no matter what. All while coming in to try and get some 'actual work' done. Mac OS Catalina. Adobe Photoshop latest yeah version.

And yes, I cleared preferences, tried it with and without the graphics processor option (that has been causing known issues for over a year) restarted, rebooted, you name it.

It would help if you indicated the Photoshop version and OS.

Have you reset your Photoshop preferences?

Posting in the forums is not a way to get Adobe's attention. Please post here https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html and share a link so others can add to it - Adobe uses votes to decide what bugs to fix...

Yes! Exactly same thing has happened to me several times during past few days (Photoshop stuck on save again as I'm writing...). I'm working on external server of our agency, so I thought that might cause the problem when saving large files, but I'm kinda "happy" to hear someone else is having similar problems. For me it's even worse: When Photoshop stucks and I forcequit it, my Finder crashes (Working on 15' Macbook Pro 2019) and I can't relaunch it anymore, so I have to restart my whole computer. This has been driving me nuts for few days!
