Photoshop creates duplicate photo when dragged

I cannot find an answer to this problem anywhere! When I drag a photo around on a document, it duplicates itself. The duplicate photo is underneath the one I am dragging and it doesn't show as a layer nor can I select or delete it. I've literally done this process for years with no problem but now I cannot do my project with this problem!

I have rebooted. My Photoshop is up to date. I'm on a MacBook running OS Catalina. Please help!
