Photoshop crop not working how I want please help

What in the world am I doing wrong? I bring in a vertical photo. I crop to square. Perfect. BUT I want to do this with 12 photos on the same page so I can print to one photo sheet. This is giving me a fit! When I crop the photo it drops the entire page to that size. So fine... I open a new project to the sheet size I need thinking I can copy and paste all of my "cropped" images to that project but oh no, when I select on my cropped image it still selects the entire vertical image just hides where I cropped out but when I paste it shows the entire pic.

The images attached below -

I start with an 8.5 x 11 project size

I crop my vertical image to square  - it shrinks my entire project size to that

i select my cropped image and you can see it shows the vertical rectangle as if the entire pic is still there

lastly I opened a new project and pasted and it didn't paste just the cropped part. So frustrating!

Cropping works on an entire Photoshop document. If each of the 12 images is on its own layer in one document, try this:

  • Rectangular Marquee tool: set options to fixed size, such as 100px x 100px or 250 px x 250 px, or whatever size you need for all
  • Select the correct layer
  • Click and drag the marquee to the the area of the image you want
  • Click the Mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel (non-destructive editing)
  • Repeat, selecting the "correct" layer each time
