Question

Photoshop CS 5 crashes after updating and then using File --> Automate --> Batch

I am running Photoshop CS5 (build 12.0.4 x32) on my XP 32-bit machine and have done so without major problems until about a week ago.

Then all of a sudden when accessing File --> Automate --> Batch the program crashes and I have to force it shutting down manually after which I can restart Photoshop. When trying to access the batch command hereafter the same crash reappears rendering batch commands useless.

I thought about posting here but then decided to reinstall Photoshop again. This enables the fully working software including batch commands once again. However after a short while the update software asks to download and install some patches for all programs. After doing so the same problem happens again in regards to the batch command. Photoshop crashes when accessing it and won't work at all.

I now repeated this procedure twice and have no idea what to do about it.

Is there anybody that has had this experience or knows about a solution?

Do I have to contact Adobe with an error report?

Any help and comment is welcome and mostly appreciated.

I have the same problem , I am using a Microtech 1800f scanner with their Scan wizard pro software V7.21. Batch used to work OK, but has started to cause   Photoshop to crash . The only thing that I have changed is the photoshop updates and added the old style contact sheet plug in. The scanner is quite old and I dont see microtech doing any software updates for this model. I wont be getting a new scanner out of my employers any time soon either so a more helpfull work through to the problem from Adobe would be much appreciated.

Sorry, but only the authors of the scanner driver can fix the bugs in the scanner driver.

So you'll probably have to scan outside of Photoshop.

But the scanner drivers authors got it right enough for it to work when I first installed Photoshop !

Using your logic WW2 starting was Americas fault for having its Army in the wrong place.

So seriousely, just delete the plug in from the twain folder or do I have to uninstall it using the installer?

I have the same problem, and I do not have an HP Scanner. Problem only happens when I install

the latest PS update. It is very annoying!

Then what problem, exactly, do you have?

And have you tried disabling the TWAIN plugin, or updating your TWAIN scanner driver?

I already stated the problem - it is really quite simple - after the latest Adobe update, File>Automate>Batch crashes - same issue that many others are reporting. What is causing it, I do not know. I do not have a scanner installed, or any scanner drivers on this particular system, so I am not so quick to blame it on HP, Epson, or whoever. However, removing the Adobe "optional" twain plug-in does seem to fix the problem.

We've just gone from PS Elements to CS 5 and what a disappointment this issue is. Apart from finding out the hard way and by losing a days work, we're now faced with going back to Elements as there is no way I'm saving files individually etc. We'll try and get a refund or exchange it for a version of PS that can run with our Epson 10000xl and its drivers. I find it hard to believe that all scanner drivers are buggy and causing this issue and its no fault of Adobes at all? Totally amazed Adobe release software that cannot perform one if its most basic functions without problems???

Not all scanner drivers are buggy, but a large number are.  Again, that's what made us move the TWAIN driver plugin to optional status in the first place.

Correctly written TWAIN drivers are working without problems.

But TWAIN drivers with bugs, well, they still have bugs -- until the bugs get fixed, they are not going to work correctly.

And you are also blaming the wrong party.

Why are you not asking Epson to fix their drivers?

Same Problem here. It's annoying that I need both features at the same time, so deleting the TWAIN Plugin is not really a solution.

Does anyone have another solution for this Problem?

Earlier I posted my solution but not directly to you.  So in case you missed it here it is again.  If you have a 64 bit machine use the 32 bit version of CS5 with the twain installed and then switch to the 64 bit version to run batches.  I have icons for both versions on my Quick launch bar.  It's a little hassle but easier than scanning outside photoshop.  If your on a 32 bit machine, your out of luck.

    Hi.

I did see your reply but thanks for contacting me direct, I appreciate it. Unfortunately I do have 32 bit machine at present. Hopefully September should see my 64bit PC rolled out so at least there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    Thanks again

I have the same problem. Any fix? Any idea?

I have the same problem with Photoshop and the reason is the TWAIN plug-in. If I remove TWAIN the batch command works fine, but if I install it back then the batch command crashes Photoshop. Very annoying since I need my scanner and the batch command almost every day. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED ASAP!!!

Thank you, Jukkall, as this is the first we've heard here on the forum of a possible workaround - removal of the TWAIN plug-in.

Can you be a little more specific?  Exactly what file(s) did you move/remove?  In other words, exactly how did you go about removing TWAIN to work around this problem?
