Photoshop CS file opens in CC, but will not open again after saving.

Hi all. Here's the scenario I'm facing:


At work, we're on Photoshop CS (version 6, I think).

At home, I'm up to date on Photoshop CC (currently 20.0.3, but this has been happening for a long time on every version).

If I bring home PSD files that were created in CS and try to work on them in CC, they open fine. However, once I edit one, save it, and close it, it will no longer open. Trying to open the file again after saving in CC and closing it yields the "Could not complete your request because of a program error" message.

This happens all the time and it's a constant thorn in my workflow. Anyone experience this? Thank you!

    JJMack, thank you. Thus far, I haven't had issues with compatibility in CS6 - it's CC that is having trouble opening the files, but only after successfully opening them once and closing them out. They continue to open in CS6 just fine, but will not open in CC again once I've closed them, even after successfully opening in CC the first time. (Hope that makes sense). Your tip about being able to install CS6 is fantastic; I did not know that! I was under the impression CS6 wouldn't even run on newer Macs, but that seems like a way to get around this frustration, at least for now. Thank you!

    If You save layered PSD file make sure you save with max compatibility.  CC has layer featured that are not support in CS6.  So PSD file you save using CC at home can have compatibility problem at work in CS6.

    With your Subscription you can install CS6 as well as CC version of Photoshop.  There are some differences between CS6 Creative cloud version 13.1.2 and perpetual CS6 versions 13.0.6 and version 13.0.1.3 but file should be compatible. So document you want  to work on at home and at work you should onl6 use CS6 on those documents.

    If you save the file to a new psd file instead of saving over the old one does that make a difference?

    I can't say for certain, because the problem is a bit more complex, in that it doesn't happen to every single file. It DOES happen every time I follow this workflow (bring work home that was created in CS), but from what I've been able to ascertain, it seems to primarily affect first file I save (sometimes to the first few). Subsequent files tend to work ok. My first instinct would be to say the file is corrupt, but that isn't the case, for two reasons:

    A) The file continues to be fine if I open it back in CS - everything is perfect.

    B) This happens every single time - without fail - when I bring a batch of files home from work. The first file to be opened and saved will immediately no longer be able to be opened in CC once I close it. The remaining files, for the most part, are ok. It makes no difference which file I open first - be it the one at the top of the folder or not - but that file always becomes a sacrificial lamb, so to speak.
