Photoshop CS5 brush randomly becomes straight lines

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with my student edition version of photoshop CS5. For some unknown reason the brush tool randomly stops drawing lines that I command it to do (using my tablet pen) and will correct itself when I open another program (any program). Instead of drawing a curve, it will just draw a straight line and half the time not even for very far. I cant figure out for the life of me what is causing this problem. My laptop isnt on stickykeys or anything like that and I am running windows 7 64 bit with 8 gig of ram..

THANKYOU SO MUCH in advance if you can help a student in need of doing her homework!

I join to the Straight Line Problem Club.

I used to work in an "All in One" Pc, with W10 and a Wacom Intuos , in these PC never gave me the problem. But recently I changed my pc. Same Wacom same OS and the problem shows now.

I think this is maybe a incompatibility issue, some hardware driver is giving me the problem (i think) 'cause my new pc were built by me

When appears, I skip this problem using Alt+Tab.

Hello, which photoshop version? which version of the Wacom Driver? Had you done the text files trick to have wintab?

Answered this problem, it was a windows 7 issue with the generic hanvon tablet that I had. Check out the responses I made to others on this thread for more detail.

Nope its not exclusive to windows 7. Im on up to date Windows 10 with Wacom Intuos 4 PTK-840 with latest drivers, and NOT wireless.

I believe it m ight be related to those OpenGL improvements. It starts often right after i pan zoomed in and rotated canvas with any OpenGL profiles used. Cant disable them entirely cause i need to rotate the canvas.

My GTX970 is also up to date with drivers.

This issue is horrible. You never know when it happens, only after a while of struggling to get a proper brush stroke (impossible to get when the issue is on - while you wonder if its the pressure, color, brush size or other things that gives you bad effect) when you realise its THAT issue again. It drives me crazy.

    Im on Photoshop CS5 64bit. 4x3,4Ghz CPU, 8 GB ram and GTX970, Windows 10

For me, changing the tablet's hotkey from "hand tool" to "spacebar" fixed the issue.

Allso have this from time to time.

The brush loses response and does little short straight lines here and there, it's a software glitch. I usually save my document when that happens, this usually snaps it out of it but a few times I had to wait then save again. I used to be able to just swap apps or click on layers or something but that doesn't work anymore.

    XP 32bit

    CS5 32bit

I had the same promlem with CS4 trial, with my old Manhattan tablet and with my new Intuo's. I think it's a bug that comes in from time to time with panel, window focus changes. Or Id get up to fetch a cup of coffee and when I come back it's like that.

What kind of tablet do you use? Ive also read a lot and it seems people have this problem with older versions. It seems that adobe might not have made cs5 with windows xp users in mind. if I were you I would upgrade, but if you're using a generic tablet brand you may run into the same problem that I did.

Did you solve the problem? And if you did, how did you solve it?

I have the same problem you have/had, lots of people have this issue...

Accually I still have this problem. The lines randomly becomes straight and when it do, I simply either wait it out or change to annother tool and then change back to the brush and hope it's solved.

I'm wondering if it have something to do with the computer prestanda, because it almost seems like the computer gets tired and Photoshop runs ahead. Then the line simply ens up becoming a straight dot-to-dot line, more easy for the computer to generate than the nice flowy lines I accually am trying to make. It feels like that especially when I draw many lines quickly and some of them becomes straight and some not. Or am I wrong?

Is this a prestanda problem? Because the installation didn't complain at my computer being below the requirements...

do you have the intuos4 wireless aswell?

What wacom tablet did you get? I'm haveing the exact same issue. I've been calling adobe support for the past 2 days and they don't seem to have a solution to this problem

Maybe I can get the same tablet you have if I can't get the Hanvon to work.

I too have that problem. Not only does the lines get straight randomly (sometimes for more than one line and sometimes only for one) but also loses the pen pressure. I have a Waccom Bamboo, Windows XP and Photoshop CS5, and it hever happened before with CS2, on the same computer and with the same tablet!

Is this a common problem? I don't think it has anything to do with the shift key in my case.

Hm, it sounds like windows XP might be the problem. It is a bit too old I think to run adobe cs5 well. Have you managed to fix this problem? I'd suggest getting windows vista or 7. as far as i know, any wacom tablet should work with any adobe suite... from my EXTENSIVE research on the internet to try and solve this problem without having to pay a lot of money for a new tablet.

Hope this helps in some way!

    Isn't your "shift" key stuck?

    August 24, 2010

No it's not stuck at all

I'd uninstall the tablet then and check for updated drivers.
