Hi!

I have the trial english version of this software.

From where EXACTLY can I download this addtional plugin? (And why is it not in the SW in the first place?)

Best regards

There seem to be dozens of videos on the web telling me how great the new Refine Edge tool is, but I am yet to be able to extract an image using it. Every time I need to extract an image, I open up my old CS2 (argh!) and use my Bamboo to outline and extract it, then go back into what I was doing. What a waste of time.

Does anyone know if there is a plug-in to do this the old way? The Refine Edge looks great when I watch someone do it in a video, but for an amateur like me, I am yet to be able to use the image I extract with it - they always look like crap, if I can even get to the point of outlining it properly.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here?!?!

You definately want to be using the new Refine Edge dialog. Its lightyears better than the old defunct Extract.

You say that Refine Edge is "lightyears better than old defunct Extract.  Can you tell me how?

I had Windows PS7 before I bought this Mac CS5 and I used to get good results with the Extract Filter.  Now I'm trying to extract a girl's picture to put into a composite image.  I followed exactly the steps in Jan Kabili's video instruction [http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-photoshop-cs5/using-improved-selecting-and-masking/] and I got awful results.  Using "Smart Radius", sharp edges of the original selection became eroded several pixels back and both expanded selection and original selection turned gray wherever the refine radius tool was used.

Multiple passes with the "refine" tool seem to erase selected areas rather than increase them.

I noticed that another user had the same complaint in a mid May posting to the "where is extract filter?" thread.

I'd surely like to know how to make this thing work, because I have a three day deadline to get the project done.

    Can you help?

That Jan Kabili tutorial is a bit difficult to follow on images other than hers. I found the "How to" on the new Knowledge Panel much better.

    New Knowledge panel?

    Check it out!

In the tech note that lists the optional or non-compatible plug-ins, http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/828/cpsid_82824.html you'll see

that they recommend to use refine mask/edge rather than extract (there is indeed a color decontamination option)

Also, you'll see a link that will be active later about the optional plug-ins.

The CS5 optional plug-ins haven't been posted yet but if you're trying CS5 then you might as well try out the new Refine Edge dialog as it does a much better job than the Extract filter
