Hi!
I just installed windows 8 and i got a lot of problems with CS6 Extended (Design and web premium creative suite installed) and GPU use (i never had a problem under windows 7).

My sistem is updated and equipped with a I7, 8 GB RAM and a Radeon HD 5870 card and i'm working winth Canon EOS 1Dx and EOS 5D mkIII raw files (but the problems appear also with snall jpg)

When PS use the GPU acceleration the display becone crazy showing a lot of different things.

This is the first list of things appening:
A) very often (about 95% of times) when i use the crop tool the image start to flicker from visible to black ( http://www.asf-images.com/ps1.jpg ) so it is impossible to work; sometimes (50% of times) images become visible again moving the mouse to a different location and after moving again the mouse the images fade to black and so on... frustrating.

B) cropping become very slow

C) during crop images a big distorsion appear ( http://www.asf-images.com/ps2.jpg)

D) sometimes during crop or changing the GPU setting the border outside the image become filled of gray/white little square as a trasparent layer (http://www.asf-images.com/ps4.jpg)

E) after canceling the crop tool action (using the cancel button in the Option tool bar) the image fade to black (http://www.asf-images.com/ps5.jpg )

This appens also with blur tool, liquify and all that use the mercury engine.

Changing GPU drawing mode from normal to basic or advanced all works but after closing and reopening PS problems are still visible
Sometimes the graphic card GPU disapper (http://www.asf-images.com/ps3.jpg)

Pleae, Help!!!
Last: sorry for my english 🙂

so, 7 months later and they're still "working on it".. typical adobe bs.

That's not really fair, norway_bob.

AMD (ATI), not Adobe, is responsible for the display problems with Windows 8 and Photoshop.  Specifically, AMD has been struggling to release good, working display drivers since around 8 / 2012 (when Catalyst 12.8 was released).  Honest!  They've really fallen on their faces!

The good news is that the current Catalyst 13.3 beta 3 display driver, which looks like it might reach release status soon,  works very well with Photoshop (I've been using it for a month).  It may solve whatever problems you're seeing.  Visit the AMD web site and download the driver for your particular system and video card, and look for Catalyst 13.3 beta 3, specifically.

eh. after years of adobe's shortcomings in various of their products, their typical solutions is to say "we're working on it". certain issues they've been "working on" for the last couple versions of CS. i do agree with you that AMD has been slacking on their part as well lately, but i think the adobe is the main culprit here. not sure if you work with premiere or not, but adobe decided to completely cut out the customer base that uses AMD gpu's by not making it compatible with premiere. look up the mercury playback engine ordeal.

for the flickering black screen, go to Edit>Preferences>Performence>-under advanced GPU processing settings-click "advanced">change drawing mode to basic.

that should fix it

I ran in to the same issue - tried everything mentioned no luck.  I was using RGB color mode and just for the heck of it I switched to CMYK color mode and the problems stopped - (knock on wood)..............

I tried that also. It seems that seens I updated my Photoshop cs6 to 13.1.1 the "use graphic processor" doesn't change anything. I no longer have the smooth zoom and the pixel borders...

I tried to reset the tools that seemed to be affected - nope.  Then I tried to reset all the tools - nope.  I then googled for an update for Win8 - nope, it seem that Photoshop is Win8 ok.  I then went into preferences and gave Photoshop a boost with memory and set up a larger scratch disk - nope although it did seem to help a wee bit.  My computer has an ATI Radeon 5860 GPU graphic card so I went into device manager to take a look - no problem.  So I clicked the 'look a newer driver' - search came up empty.  I then went to ATI's website and there is an update which I downloaded and installed still - nope, same issue.  Then I remembered I had switched my color pallete to CMYK for the color picker tool and fill tool because I was trying match a CMYK print cartridge color while I was in RGB color mode.  I changed the color mode for the screen to CMYK and the problem stopped.  It is working for me so far - (knock on wood)!!!

I guess I would check to make sure that both are the same.   I have been a novice of Photoshop for a long time but never a pro.  When I have issues with Photoshop I start looking and sometime I can solve it sometimes I can't.  I could be that when I start up tomarrow the problem will be back but for now its ok.  One more thing - it could just be RGB is the problem, just saying.    Hope this helps.

Podsnap....I have the same concerns as you. I changed GPU to Basic...which took care of wierd way that CS6 behaves...but, by changing to Basic mode I lost tools that are "suppose" to be available to use in CS6. I wonder the same thing as you....since I have never received any information from Adobe as to what to expect....as to if the issue will ever be resolved and if so when and....how will those that have CS6 be alerted to the problem being resolved.

Assuming your video card is ATI, have you reported the issue to them?  Have you asked them when to expect working drivers?

Only by getting a lot of complaints from Photoshop users will they begin to take Photoshop seriously.  As it is, they're most concerned with making video games work on Windows 8.

So, Noel, are you saying that this is an issue that Adobe is not responsiible for correcting? Are you an employee or spokesperson for Adobe? I am just wondering, since the product I purchased is Adobe Photoshope CS6 (which I am using on a computer that uses Windows 8) , why would I need to contact ATI?

I mentioned the problems I am experiencing in a post listed above. Noel, the problem in changing to Basic GPU mode is that you lose the ability to use certain tools (for example, the blur tool is one of the tools that do not work for me in CS6/Windows 8 when I make the change to Basic mode.) I would like to have Photoshope set up in advanced mode, have the ability to use all the tools that are offered in CS6, and have it work correctly.

xfile 102, It seems the problem is PS CS6 and Windows 8 do not get along so well together. I just wonder if Adobe will send something to correct the issues to those of us that are having these problems.

Please read the previous posts.  The Win8 problems are due to bugs in Win8, and some issues with the video drivers for Win8.

We are working with Microsoft and the GPU vendors to get things fixed.

I Have this problem as well. I can run CS 5 in Windows 8 without problems. Adobe programming has always been dubious. Clearly GPU acceleration in CS6 with ATI drivers was never adequately tested by Adobe. It has nothing to do with Windows 8 and everything to do with incompetent Adobe programming and their attitude toward customers. Class action suit?

I just got a new computer which had windows8. I bought PS CS6 at the same time. I am happy to have found this post because I didn't understand why all the flickering and changing background screens was going on. It drives me nuts! Plus, it's very hard to edit photos when they are flickering or going completely black. I did the suggestion listed above from David and tried editing one photo....no flickering or changing backgrounds from white...to gray...to black....to checkerboard. So far, so good.

But...it seems doing this causes loss of some of the tools :-(

Sorry you are having a problem.  We have identified the problem and are working with Intel and AMD on a solution.  In the meantime please run PS in Basic mode.  This should clear up most of the transparency around the image and flickering issues.

I have an issue with Windows 8 and Photoshop CS6 as well. I just installed Windows 8, then reinstalled CS6, but as soon as I open Photoshop, it locks up. Everytime. No matter what. I cannot change any settings because I cannot get to any menus in Photoshop. As SOON as the Workspace loads, the program hangs. Every time. What could be the problem?
