Photoshop File corrupted

I have a photoshop file which was working fine. I closed it down then when I went to open it, it seems to be corrupted.
I'm absolutely gutted as this was for work and i'm afraid I'll have to re-do the whole illustration again.
Every time I try to open it it says 'The was a problem refine the layer data. Read the composite data instead?". Then I click yes to do that, and it says "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop".
But I created this image in this version of PS so how can that be right. Plus the thumbnail in the saved files loos really weird and corrupted.
This isn't first time this has happened.
Any help much appreciated.
Thank you

Correct answer Norman Sanders

it is an expensive lesson to learn but when working on a time-consuming file, save the file at regular intervals with a numbered version, such as: filename_1. filename_2, etc.

Yes good tip I will be doing that from now on. Think I need to get a new external hard drive too.

Lucy, Time Machine (which is a must) normally does hourly backups. You may want to do more than that. Consider the suggestion I made earlier.

Thanks Ged.
Yea I'm using a Mac, but don't have Time Machine set up unfortunately. I have just done that now though, so will have it for any future issues.
At the point when I backed up the file, it must have already been corrupted as the back up is also corrupt

Hi

You don't mention what operating system you have but if it's a MAC you could try this

How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

If you're on Windows you could try right clicking on the file and selecting Previous Version

You should always keep a backup of your important files
