Photoshop Font Dropdown Menu Unoptimized/Slow

This seems to be a problem for many people with a sizeable amount of fonts.

Why is the Photoshop font menu so slow? It's not because of the previews, because Illustrator handles the same amount w/ previews with no lag whatsoever! Is it because PS has to rasterize the text and AI doesn't? Or might it be because Photoshop is very unoptimized here?

Anyways, I hope this can be fixed because it can get really, really tiresome to have bad performance in the software you use everyday while working with a really capable workstation.
