Photoshop gradient classic not working like it used to

I like to use the gradient tool mutpile times on the same alpha channel to create the mask I want. The "classic gradient" tool isn't working like it used to and is driving me to despair. It doesnt change the foreground / background when sifting using the x key, and when you add gradients it mixes them oddly. - I am paying attention to the mode.

Adobe, for the millionth time, from yet another user, please stop fixing things that work!
