Question

Photoshop hangs at 94% when saving smart object

Issue is not persistent. Sometimes it occurs, sometimes it doesn't. On different files, with different elements and different smart objects.

When opening smart object within a .psd project file, after changing content of this SO, photoshop save progress is quick until 90-91% then it slows down and stops at 94% for 1-10 minutes. After this it finishes save instantly.

Basically everything hangs (every other opened tabs are hardly accessible) and CPU usage is way over 90% all the time.

I'm using 2 separate SSD as cache disks, i have 16 GB RAM available and 11 GB is available for PS. It doesn't matter if GPU support is on or off.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like this is a problem in file compression. PSD and PSB are compressed by default, including smart objects which are PSBs.

Disable compression in Preferences and see if things improve.

BTW, smart objects use the Windows Temp directory (on the system drive) as working storage, not the scratch disk.

Have you tried resetting the preferences?

I often see very similar behavior in CC 2019 on a MBP Laptop.  Something happens at 94% and like the OP, I've waited 5-10 minutes at 94% before it suddenly finishes.

I can't correlate it to Smart Objects as I don't use them as much, but it does not appear to correlate to size of file.  Sorry this is so vague but I've stared at 94% for so long that when I searched for "photoshop 94%" I was lead here.

Does your system disk have enough free space?

Because if you check out the actual location of the SO by car-clicking the name field of its window you may notice it’s not even being saved to the Scratch Disk but the system disk …

The link you've provided is useless in this case, because of 2 reasons: 1) basically my Photoshop is fully optimised, 2) the problem with performance is not permanent. And doesn't include very large files with multiple layers.

All my disks have enough free space. My system disk is SSD. My scratch disks are SSD. And it's not a disk/memory performance problem because 10x bigger files save without a problem.

Saving a Photoshop Smart Object means saving the file as a temp file to the OS disk.

So if that does not work as expected you may have to do some trouble shooting there.

What have you done for generic Photoshop trouble-shooting so far?
