Photoshop Mask Editing Problem

I am running Photoshop 2024 v.25.11.0 on a 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro that is running macOS Sonoma 14.6.1.

Strange things are thappening when I try to edit a mask with the Gradient tool.

I have an adjustment layer that I have applied a mask to by Command-Clicking the channel that I saved when I created the mask and dragging it to the layer. The mask is half black (top; sky) and half white (bottom; ground) So far, so good.

I have selected the Gradient tool and want to drag some low opacity linear gradients into the bottom and lower corners of the white portion of the mask (I want to partially mask these areas).

But when I click-and-drag the gradient tool the top, black portion of the mask turns gray!

What am I doing wrong?

Any assistance appreciated.

Many thanks to Spas K., Bojan, and davecm. I've figured it out and want to share the answer.

I needed to go to the "Select and manage gradient presets" drop-down in the Gradient Tool Bar, then in the "Basics" folder select the "Foreground to Transparent" thumbnail.

The new Gradient Tool has...well...lots of curves...and knuckleballs.

Thanks again for the assistance. You made me think.

Please upload a screenshot; there could be several reasons why the top portion is turning grey.

Attached are two screenshots of the mask, before and after attempting to use a linear gradient to edit the mask.

Is there any way to bump up this question about difficulty with masks and the Gradient Tool? I sure would like to resolve the problem.  Before and after screenshots have been included. Thank you.

Hey there. If you can post a couple of screenshots or a video showing the issue and the setup, that would be really helpful!
