Hi there,

We do not recommend usin Photoshop with network drives, because when you save and open files across a network or from removable media, many variables affect application performance. Therefore, some problems occur more frequently when you work across a network or from removable media than from a local hard disk. (Network-related problems include damaged files, denied access, or slow performance.) In these situations, Photoshop can return one of the following error messages:

  • "Could not complete this operation because this file is in an unknown format."
  • "Could not complete the request because the file is locked."
  • "Could not save because of a disk error."

Hi Sahil, Interesting information. Let me qualify; I've been using PS since 1994 whilst working on a picture desk for a regional newspaper in the UK. We worked off a main frame computer in those days i.e. network drives. In subsequent years, 15 in fact, as a freelance photographer I've been using PS across network drives withpout any problems whatsoever. So the information from yourself and your colleague on the helpline has come as quite a surprise to me. Though your colleague on the helpline did imply major loss of data. So now on Adobe's advice I have to uninvent the wheel? Transfer 64gb from a day's photo shoot on to my local HD. No, I'll try and reconnect to my NAS drive and carry on as I have for the last 25 years. But thanks for the info. I now know that I stand to lose data even though that's not happenend in nearly 25 years. Many thanks, yours without prejudice. MJH
