Photoshop not opening image in screen - sends to layer

I installed Ps yesterday and as complete novice ran tutorial with images provided. However when opening image it does not open in screen but in layer.  Please can anyone advise what is going on? Thanks

    Hi christinet34757552,

    Which version of Photoshop have you installed and what is your operating system? Do you mean that you can see the image preview in the Layer's panel but not in the main workspace? Could you please post a screenshot of what the issue looks like?
