Question

Photoshop not opening on some iMacs

Hello,

I am a teacher [personal information removed by moderator]. I am in a computer classroom running iMacs using MacOS Catalina 10.15.2.  We have Photoshop CC2018 installed individually on all of the iMacs (no Creative Cloud).  Photoshop worked great for the past 8 months with no problems at all.  Beginning in the middle of December 2019, several of the iMacs would no longer open the Photoshop application.  It did not matter whether the iMacs were running 10.15.1 or 10.15.2.  There are 20 iMacs running Photoshop perfectly while 15 will not open the application at all.  I have deleted Preference files, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, but no change on those 15 iMacs.  What other options can be suggested?  Thank you, Rob Garretson

Photoshop 21.0 & Photoshop 20.0.7 work with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) but there are these known compatibility issues you should be aware of.

Be nice if the Adobe Helpx articles were kept up-to-date about Catalina.

https://helpx.adobe.com/au/photoshop/kb/photoshop-and-macos-catalina.html says 20.0.6 and later work with Catalina.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-and-macos-catalina.html says 20.0.7 and later work with Catalina.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements/2019.html for 20.x does not mention Catalina support at all.

Have you checked your Apple System Prefs/Security to ensure Photoshop has permission to access the HD?

Catalina is a mess with changing system security for both apps and supporting folders.

I agree with @John_Waller - CC2020 is the only version tested for Catalina.

Also with the new Adobe N1 policy (current version plus 1 verison previous) - your admin should be checking to ensure you are in compliance with your maintenance agreement with Adobe.

Photoshop 2020 is the only version tested and supported by Adobe on Catalina. Any reason you cannot run 2020 on all your Macs running Catalina?

Thanks for the response.  It is curiuos that Photoshop runs great on 20 on the iMacs and not at all on 15.  All using the same applications and operating system.

Yes, it is curious but not unexpected. You're running an unsupported mix of Photoshop version and operating system so your experience on each computer may vary. Some may work, others not. Adobe has not tested or coded for those configurations. Always ensure your app versions are supported on your operating system version regardless of the consistency of your classroom setup.

Running Photoshop 2020 on each Catalina Mac should work on all and is supported by Adobe.
