Photoshop opens edited version of photo, won't open original

I was wondering if anyone had this issue that could tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I had a file named: IMG_1002.jpg.

I used "open as" to open the image as camera raw to edit it.

Once I finished editing I chose "Save As" and named the image "Boulder.jpg".

Now, if I open the original (IMG_1002.jpg) with Photoshop, photoshop launches, camera raw lauches and the edited version of IMG_1002.jpg opens.  But there should not be an edited version of IMG_1002.jpg because I saved the edit as Boulder.jpg.

The thumbnail is still the orignal image and if I open it with windows photo viewer, it's still the orignal image...somehow photoshop will not open the original, unedited version.

Hopefully that isn't too confusing...does anyone know how to make photoshop stop doing this?

Cheers

Rach

The edits were written into the file as metadata by Camera Raw. This is a set of instructions that is non destructive. They can easily be removed if you use Adobe Bridge. View the folder where the image is with Bridge. Select the image in Bridge and go to Edit>Develop Settings>Clear Settings.

Thank you heaps for explaining that!  It worked, and now I know why it happened in the first place.

ACR treats jpegs the same way as raw files.

When you edit a jpeg in ACR, the edits are stored as text instructions in the metadata. Only ACR reads this metadata, and so the edits are not visible in other applications.

When you save out the edited jpeg from Photoshop, the edits are baked into the pixel content, and so will be visible elsewhere.

You can choose whether to open jpegs through ACR, or directly into Photoshop, in the ACR preferences. The default setting is "open jpegs with settings" - meaning that any jpeg that already has ACR metadata, will continue to open there. The alternatives are always or never.

When selecting a jpg in the Open-dialog and the Format is given as »Camera Raw« one can still set it to »JPEG« manually.

    Is there an XMP file?

Please post a screenshot of the opening-dialog with the original jpg file selected.

I can't find an xmp file for that image.

Here is what the image looks like in photo viewer...

    Here is the opening dialog...

Here is what opens in PS.
