Question

Photoshop rename all files during opening and saving!

Hello everybody!

I am sharing my problem in case anyone else dealing with a similar situation and if there is a solution.

I am using Windows 10, 22H2 version and suddenly after the last Photoshop upgrade (25.7), when I open a few .psd files, Photoshop automatically renames them to "YWEB_R~X.psd" which "YWeb_R......" is the standard name of all files and X is the number of files I have opened at the same time. It also saves the files exactly like that! I uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop and Photoshop beta too, to check if there is a bug in certain versions but NO, both have the same problem! Below are two screenshots of opening and saving the files.

Do you have any idea what is going on?

I am having the same issue, it also seems to be a onedrive issue. My only workaround is to save on my desktop first, rename it, then transfer it in and out of my onedrive/sharepoint folder once Im done with it. Super weird!

Good afternoon,
were you able to solve the problem?

Hello! Thanks so much for asking. Unfortunately, I haven't found a logical solution.

I also added to this "treasure hunt" the Technical Department of the company I work for, but once again they could not come up with a reasonable explanation. Even though I installed and uninstalled Photoshop thousands of times, I saw no improvement. So it seems that the best thing we can do is create a new user in Windows and see if it's working. There is a case that Photoshop may not be the only guilty. The collaboration of OneDrive and PH may cause this conflict too. Seems that it is happening (file's name change) only when I am working directly through OneDrive. We deleted OD and reinstalled it but obviously, we did not have the expected results. I strongly believe that probably has to do with that but I can't prove it and neither TD. So the creation of a new user in Windows may seem the only way out of this mess. As soon as I have news, I will inform you.

@Debby@Myl

Have you checked for viruses and malware? Malwarebytes has a free trial.

Hey, @Debby@Myl. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

Where do you keep the original images? On the internal or an external drive? Do you open/export the images using an action/script or just the usual File > Open method?

Try these suggestions:

1 - If you're using an action/script-based workflow, try recreating the Action with the current version of Photoshop & check if that helps.

2 - Update Windows to the latest version, go to the location of the preference folder below, and rename it to backup.

  • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2024 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2024. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
  • Restart the computer.

These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

Hello @Sameer K and thanks so much for the help.

Unfortunately, I haven't yet found the conflict reason. I am not using action or script just the regular open way. I do not use internal drives. I have all my files up in the company's OneDrive cloud. I open, create, save, close, or export only through OneDrive so to have my files with me anywhere. Everymorning is working properly and every afternoon is starting "playing" with me. It feels like Photoshop is getting tired... 🙂 It starts inside Windows without letting me change the PSD file names and continues with changing the file names I open inside Photoshop saving them like that too!

Copy the files to the desktop and open from there, what happens?
