When are you going to fix this bug? It's so annoying. There are thousands of people reporting this issue. It seems like a simple fix.

Note from moderator:

This is the bug that was caused by a change in macOS that Adobe has since fixed.

  • In 22.4.1 Adobe introduced Save a Copy
  • In 22.4.2 Adobe included the ability to revert to the legacy behavior in preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options

This post is now locked since this issue is solved. You can add to this merged thread to comment:

You are right, we cannot have the same workflow as with v.1.0

If you want to work with the lastest tools of this new century, forget Save As to produce flattened images.  Use instead Export functions.

first saved as a psd layered file

saved as a jpeg for output

still having psd file open made change to the file going to save OVER the jpeg

for output creates a SECOND jpeg appended with copy to the file name EVEN when chosen to overwrite existing jpeg

simple to understand images included please fix not updating anymore until this is an established fix

You can wait for Adobe to fix this... Or a pragmatic approach would be to use a script in the meantime.

Other users can offer help with a script to see if this workaround fixes the issue for you, however, end-users obviously can't rewrite/fix the software.

These user/community pages are generally ignored by Adobe staff, you need to post at the following site in order to be heard:

Kindly try File > Export As > JPEG instead of File > Save As > JPEG.

Hope this helps.

or you can set your export preferences to JPG

File > Export > (set your Quick Export Format to JPG) > hit OK.

Then

File > Export > Quick Export as JPG

This is just stupid. It used to be a simple key command. There's no key command for quick export. And the other key command for export is not only more complicated but brings up a new window with a bunch of choices I don't want. How is this better?

Just updated Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7 but this irritating problem still isn't solved. Since Mac OS came with Catalina a year ago (beginning of October 2019) I already have had 10 new Catalina updates, so almost every month! But still I experience several irritating problems which I think are caused by Catalina. So be warned, never update your Mac too soon... not even after ONE YEAR before you're sure that there are no more problems!

Hey all, I think Color Profile Settings may be the issue. I've been having this problem for a while with one of my macs but not with my other mac. I did a side by side on export and what I noticed was that the Color Profile on my mac that worked and let me uncheck "Copy" was set to: sRGB 1EC61966-2.1 on export and the Color Profile on the mac that did not was set to my new Moniter's Color Profile on export. On the mac that didn't work, I went to System Preferences from the finder and changed my monitor's Color to: sRGB IEC61966-2.1. I closed Photoshop and rebooted. When I restarted Photoshop it worked like before. Hope this helps!

@joycek60380056, Another note in addition to this if this still doesn't work with your older projects or current Color Profiles; When you start a New Project (or try it in your current project), in Photoshop, go to Edit / Assign Profile. From there, select "Don't Color Manage This Document". When you start saving image files, leave "Embed Color Profile" unchecked each time and it will overwrite properly without creating a new one.

You are right! It is annoying! If it has to be a copy, why does it ask if you want to replace the JPG?  you click REPLACE, and still saves it as copy, ending with two JPGs files. I really hate it. This did not happen before. Please fix it

Yup this bug is driving me crazy too; always having to delete the old jpeg and edit the name of the new one to remove “copy” from the end of the filename.

A script would probably work around the problem... Or just keep waiting for a fix.
