Photoshop Saving on Exit without asking

I have read the links saying to reset the preferences and it makes no difference.  PS 2021 which I have just downloaded and purchased autosaves on exit without warning and does not ask to do so. If you merge layers for export or to copy to another file, it will save these changes and destroy all the working elements.  I have tried resetting etc... nowhere in the software is there a box that allows this to happen or to disable it.  Can ADOBE please explain how to stop this??  It is obviously a bug you have not repaired.
