Photoshop suddendly lagging and slow?

Hi everyone!

Recently Photoshop is being super laggy for me, especially when I zoom in and out and when I try to draw (brush tool). And I have no idea why.

It can't be the file size, because even though I am working on pretty big files, it could handle bigger files mere days before without problem.

I've tried optimizing performance, reducing my History States from 50 to 20, giving it more than Memory Usage than the range suggests for ideal performance (80%), and increasing cache levels (first to 6 now to 8).

But nothing's making a difference. I've restarted the programm, restarted the computer, purged the cache...mI'm at my wits end and I can't continue working before fixing this extreme lag.

I'm working on a iMac (Big Sur), with Adobe Photoshop 2021. Yes I know it's an outdated version but it's worked perfectly fine up until 2 days ago so I refuse to believe that's the issue.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi @PhiH Photoshop really didnt start supporting M1 silicon until version 23.4 . There were numerous issues reported back with Big Sur and v 22 on M1 macs back then. The final solution was to upgrade to Monterey 12.X.

Both the Zoom and brush lags point to a GPU issue. You can try going into advanced settings in Preferences/Performance and disabling Open GL/CL. Restart PS and try again.

Thanks for your reply! I'll check if that solves the issue.

I've also started setting unused layers invisible which has helped performance but is hardly a longterm fix.

Hi @PhiH Go to Photoshop Help Menu/System Info and copy/paste details in a reply. Post only once as the system takes time to process the large amount of data.
