Question

Photoshop tools are all blacked out

All of the tools in the sub-menus, mixer brush tool etc, have a black highlight around them as if I were trying to copy and paste them. It's also around the the text in the tool options like 'Size' and 'Harness' in the brush preset picker. It's not a major issue it's just annoying and i can't figure out how to get rid of it. I'm using CS6 and i think it started when i accidentally dropped my keyboard.

Try trashing your Photoshop preferences, in the recent versions you can do this in Preferences, otherwise:

Close and relaunch Photoshop, and IMMEDIATELY hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences. You must be extremely fast on the keyboard (if you don’t see the confirmation prompt, you were too slow!)

You may have to do it a couple of times to get the hang of it.
