Photoshop Update from File

Photoshop has started "updating from file" arbitrarily since the latest "upgrade". It's annoying and potentially worse if not noticed.

Is there a way to turn it off/make it stop?

Thanks for any help.

Besides Linked layers you might want to check the setting of the following:

Preferences --> General - Auto Update of Open Documents.

By chance are your working of a NAS, Network drive, CC Libraries, Dropbox one-disk etc... So location that could be syncing?

I've had issue with Illustrator and in Design loosing connections to linked asset on OneDrive on opening, even thou the file hasn't changed. But i only noticed it happen on opening the document the first time I open them for the day.

The preference setting is there to force an update of an open document to reflect changes made in an external app (Bridge, ExifTool etc) while the file is open in Photoshop, or if a linked, smart object is updated in multiple open documents etc.

Auto-update was, strangely enough, clicked in preferences. Photoshop updating a file back to a previously saved version while you're working on it seems to be a rather bizarre feature.

Thanks though, I hope that solved it. I let you know.

Yeah, it's an odd setting?  I find no reference in the documentation for when, how it's applied or why.

Adobe really needs to do a compete reference to what these preferences setting do and when they apply. The inline tool tip is not very helpful. It would eliminate so many issues and question here.

Are you using smart objects and have linked images that you are changing outside of Photoshop? Can you post a screenshot including layers of a file that is updating?

No smart objects, just a normal psd file. I'll be working on an image, do something, and randomly it'll start to update from file and take me back to the last saved version if I don't click stop. I was working on one file (and these are different files it's happening to), for, say, 15 minutes and it tried to update from file four times.

And of course when you try and get it to do it it won't.

How does the updating from a file you are see get started. Is the Creative Cloud Desktop Application starting the update process.  Where are the update files on your machine, How do they get on your machine.  Have you scanned you machine lately is it healthy?

Creative Cloud Desktop now has an autoupdate feature which do not enable. The latest update I installed was 20.0.3 and I do not see any newer one available.

Photoshop is updating the documents I'm working on at random times, not updating the program.
