Photoshop v23.4.2 Camera Raw causes freeze on Windows 10

My instance of photoshop crahses everytime I launch the raw camera and click okay. This is regardless of the file, or operation preformed in raw camera. After clicking okay in Raw Camera, the grey, circular buffer wheel appears, then freezes. Photoshop entirly freezes, and I must force quit it from the task manager. This issue began the other day, before which my computer was able to run raw camera with no issuse.

I have attempted to troubleshoot the problem in the following ways, with no luck:

- In preferences. disable the GPU

- Manually delete Photoshop preferences, as per: https://community.adobe.com/t5/camera-raw-discussions/camera-raw-causing-photoshop-to-freeze/m-p/12779542#M17469

- Uninstall, and preform a clean install of photoshop

My System:

I am running Photoshop 2022 V 23.4.2 on:

Windows 10 (Build 19044) Enterprise Laptop;

Dell Latitude 5420;

8 GB of RAM;

16 GB of memory;

Intel i5 Processor 1135G7.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Nathaniel,

Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry for the trouble with Photoshop & Adobe Camera Raw. We're here to help.

As you have done most of the troubleshooting with Photoshop, it could be the Camera Raw Plugin that needs to be repaired.

Please follow these steps and let us know how it goes.

  • Press & hold CTRL and click on Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw
  • This should prompt you to Delete Camera Raw Preferences > Select 'Yes.'

If this works, Camera Raw preferences should open.

  • Go to > Camera Raw preferences > Performance > Set 'Use graphics processor' to Off from 'Auto' or 'Custom.'

Try using the ACR now. This should help.

If this does not resolve the problem, we have to do a manual clean-up & re-installation of the Camera Raw plug-in.

  • In the Creative Cloud app, press CTRL + ALT + T (Win) or CMD + OPT + T (macOS) to launch Creative Cloud Troubleshooter & select 'Close Creative Cloud and related processes' > click on Go.
  • Go to the following location and rename the specific folder by adding .old at the end of the folder names.
  • C:\ProgramData\Adobe > Camera Raw > Rename as > Camera Raw.old
  • Press Windows + R to open Run Dialogue > enter Appdata  go to Local > Adobe > Camera Raw > Rename as > Camera Raw.old
  • Download & install Camera Raw: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html

Let us know how it goes from here,

Thanks!
