Photoshop won't save as file extension of imported file

I am on version 22.1.1 for Photoshop for PCs.
When I open a PDF in Photoshop and made changes, I go to save my changes. It prompts me to save as a PSD file. I want it to save the file as the same file type imported. I have to then click to change the file extension to be PDF, save, and then the open file ISN'T the file that i just saved. It is the orginal file and it has the asterisk next to the name showing it hasn't save. When you try to close the file, it asks for you to save it as a PSD file again! I should be able to click the save button and close. Instead of 2 clicks it 8 clicks. Working on a  528 page document, makes thoese extra clicks time consuming. Photoshop didn't used to behave this way. Is there any setting I can make to save as a PDF by default instead of PSD.  Hoping i expained this in a way that makes sense.
