Question

Photoshop would not open files, now it will not open and will not update

PS 24.4.1.449 Win 10 64 bit

Over the past couple of months, I have received errors that Creative Cloud was not working.

In the past coupe of weeks, opening files in PS has been increasingly difficult, needing clicking a number times, or deleting a tab to allow another one to be open.

This morning, I could open PS but not open a file. I clicked on a file (TIFF, GIF, JPEG), the circle went round for 5 seconds, stopped, and nothing happened.

I closed PS, and tried to open it. Nothing happened.

I tried to update PS using Creative Cloud. Initially got an error message 131, that I should close down Creative Cloud. So I did that, but couldn't then use CC to update.

I updated (I think) CC, then restarted the computer.

I re-ran CC and got an error message that I need to close Photoshop 2023. But it hasn't been started since restart. If I click Continue I get the same message.

I pay a monthly subscription for this service!

I have not done anything about Adobe since my last message on Friday.

However, I have just opened Task manager.

There are 11 Adobe programs loaded and running (at 0%). So the CC cleaner has definitely not worked.

What is the recommendation? Abandon Adobe as a busted flush?

On the positive side, I have managed to persuade Firefox to do a copy and paste (the screen grab below), for the moment.

I followed the instructions on the cleaner page

1. the log collector tool did not create any log file, nor of course upload it. There is no \local\adobe\adobesync\coresync folder

2. I ran the cleaner for the second time this week

This left a number of adobe folders in C:\program files\ adobe, D:\program files\ adobe, D:\programdata\adobe, and quite few Registry entries.

so the cleaner isn't very cleansing.

3. Is it worth re-installing Photoshop for the 3rd time this week?

4. Adobe appears to be piling complexity on complexity. I just want Photoshop, and do not need the rest of the creaky superstructure.

5. I don't know if these are connected. Photoshop has stopped responding to clicking on Open or right-click open in PS, and Firefox has stopped copy and pasting.  Is there a possible underlying Win10 bug?

I have just spent an hour researching and writing a reply to the last message. I pressed Post and got a message that Authentification failed, and my message was deleted.

That is an appalling way to treat customers.

I shall now spend about 1/2 hour refinding the symptoms and recreating my message.

Hi @CVHManchester @Ged_Traynor 's suggestion to use the CC Cleaner Tool is your best option. It should remove ALL Adobe products and resources in one move - not 19 individual apps. I would still suggest using this method then installing a clean copy of the software to avoid future issues, which it sounds like you might already by having.

I cleared out as best as Adobe could achieve all the Creative cloud apps.

I reinstalled this and Photoshop on a new account.

I switched back to my main account and was able to open Photoshop!

I cannot open TIFF files by clicking on the file name in a folder nor by right clicking on the file name and choosing Photoshop. However, a file can be opened by Photoshop>File>Open>folder>filename

What a faff!

What has gone wrong with Photoshop?

It has taken most of today to get PS working poorly.

In Task manager, I have just found 4 Photoshop files in Background processes. So I have deleted them. This enabled me to delete PS. SO I shall now delete the remaining 18 programs.

Acrobat would not uninstall, even after deleting the Background files. When I tried after removing all the other Adobe programs, it still would not uninstall. It shows 1%, then says it is Up to date.

Adobe Desktop Service  was not present in Task manager

I deleted Adobe Content Synchronizer

I could not find the \adobesync\ folder. I copied Roaming\coresync folder to Downloads

I cleared out everything I could, restarted the computer, followed the instructions to install Creative Cloud

"The Creative Cloud desktop is almost done installing" That has just failed at 1% installation, error code 1.  If Adobe thinks 1% is almost done developing, no wonder it keeps failing.

>Get help or chat with support!

Only 2 hours in, trying to fix the problem

I have been offered a Customer Care virtual assistant.  After my experience with virtually useless installation, I am loathe to waste any more time on that.

So I shall go to Get help. There are real people there.

Thank you.

According to the instructions, I have to choose and then uninstall 19 apps separately.

What a pain. Is there no way to do this efficiently?

In Creative Cloud Desktop  (that really is an oxymoron), I followed the instruction to uninstall PS.

But there is now an error message, which annoyingly I cannot cut and paste, neither the text, nor the box. "Conflict uninstalling Photoshop..Close Photoshop". Which is of course the point, I cannot open it to close it.  But having got the message, I was able to open PS, then I closed it again.

And got the same error message.

Is that who designs Adobe products, mice running round and round a wheel, getting nowhere?
