Polygonal Lasso Tool causes CPU to spike and fans throttle on
Version: Photoshop 24.5.0
Platform: MacOS 12.7.1
Device: MacBook Air 2017
Reproduce:
1. Polygonal Lasso Tool
2. Add more than 20 points in a short period of time (10-30 seconds)
3. Listen for CPU fans increasing to max, and/or watch CPU utilization increase in Activity Monitor. (89% CPU)
Expected Result:
1. CPU should not be taxed as much as it is, just to add points to a polygon, or draw a solid line on the screen.
Observations:
1. Adding points is the most taxing on the CPU. Makes me wonder if there is something with appending points to the array that is causing the CPU spike.
2. Not closing a polygon, eg. waiting to add more points, will decrease CPU load, but it wont return to idle
3. Using a comparable tool (Pen tool) to create complex polygons does not cause the CPU to spike.
Background:
Over the years I've noticed that as soon as I start adding points with the Polygonal Lasso Tool my CPU fans throttle up to the max. Almost no other tools (pen, paint brushes, erasers, shapes… etc) cause the fans to kick on, but something about the Polygonal Lasso Tool taxes the CPU, and has with all devices I've used in the past. It makes me wonder if there is something about the way this tool is written that causes it to be a CPU hog. It's just a line with multiple points, why is it thrashing the CPU?
I love Photoshop and just wanted to share this in hopes of helping improve the quality of the product slightly.
Keep up the awesome work! 🙂
