Preset sync crashes all the time (FIXED)

Hi, I went for the Present Sync option but after a short while I had a memory issue on my MacPro: PS was using a lot of it. After a while the machine was not responding at all. When I tried to disable the option a message said the sync was still in progress while trying to quit PS would say that I had to wait until the sync was completed. This lasted the night then the app crashed.

In other words it seems I'm unable to get out of it!

I repeated the process on my laptop with the same results, even deleting the settings.

Any similar issues/solutions? thanks!

@Akash Sharma I'm sorry to report that this issue is *not* fixed in Photoshop 22.5.1 on Mac.

I can't even disable "Preset Syncing" because this happens...

  1.  Photoshop hangs (beachball) after you specify "No" on the question "Would you like to keep the presets currently saved to your Creative Cloud account?"
  2. Trashing the preferences along with the entire "Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings" folder does not fix the issue. When re-launching Photoshop with default preferences, "Preset Syncing" remains enabled for some reason. Trying to disable it causes the same hanging issue.

Four months were needed to Adobe to fix such critical bug! Then why you will pay to have the latest version of Photoshop, when 4 months you can not use it and you have to install an older version?

Hi, still no communication from Adobe about this bug ? Can't any employee browsing this pages tell us at least the issue is being worked on ? Being so silent about this bug and let users fix themselves crashes is just what we need to loose confidence in Adobe products and its continuous improvement.

I even did read a comment from an another user here that the Adobe Support CAN NOT help with that bug of Preset Sync. Seems that they even do not know about this fix that you shared with us. And I can believe that, because I have contacted so many times the support for another one bug where Select Subject and Neutral Filters are crashing on my system if the image seems to be more "hardy" for Photoshop, and they always are trying to fix the problem with same steps that never helps, like the renaming of the folder of my prefferences in Photoshop.

I think I'm having the same issue; however, I noticed that the preset syncing creates duplicates of duplicates, each time saving all the presets with an additional folder of the original presets and continues to keep adding them, essentially filling up my library. Then I got warnings that I have used all available slots for presets (i.e., swatches, brushes, shapes, styles, gradients, etc. ). Each time I quit then reopen Photoshop, it seems to be creating these new libraries containing the previous. It renames the new one with the next number (i.e., Shapes from SoandSosComputer 2, Shapes from SoandSosComputer 3, etc.) As I write this, I feel like I'm overlooking something simple and very basic, but alas, I'm lacking in connecting the dots.

Thanks for any guidance.

Thank you. —JWJ

I am tired already of Photoshop crashes and I have this same bug just as you. Excactly same happens here and I can not use Photoshop, neither my whole system if Photoshop is opened, because all of my RAM memory is taken for Photoshop.

Photoshop 22.2 closes shortly after launching it. The problem appears since the last update and seems to be related to the "Preset Synchronization", since the problem coincides when I checked this option in Edit> Preferences> General.
Every time I open or close Ps, an attempt is made to synchronize and it takes a long time, the program hangs and / or closes (about 5:30 min. Later), if I close it, a message appears warning that it will close when the synchronization will have finished (about 6:00 min. Later). I have also tried disabling the graphics processor, but the same thing happens.
If I try to uncheck the "Preset Synchronization" box in Edit> Preferences> General, I get a message saying whether or not I want to save the settings in the cloud. Whether I tell it one thing or the other, it seems to start to do so, but the cursor that changes shape to "Working" mode (symbolized by some rotating dots) freezes and Ps does not respond. In this case, after a few minutes, the screen turns black and after another minutes the computer restarts. While the screen is black, a message comes out of the monitor as receiving a signal, that is, as if the computer was turned off. After a while it restarts. If I open Ps, the box is still checked.
On the other hand, if I uncheck another, such as the use of the graphics processor, it does not give problems.
I have deleted the "Prefs" file and everything remains the same.
I would like to know how to fix it and what to do to deselect "Preset Synchronization".
Is there a way to go back to the default preferences?
Can any files be deleted to return to original preferences?

Hello,

At this point there is no way for the users impacted by the bug to uncheck in PS Preferences the Preset Syncing option without the computer crashing by memory leak. This option is tied to your computer, so resetting Preferences won't change anything.

I suggest you to try one of the two options in my previous post above (PSUSerConfig.txt or renaming your computer).

Have a good day.

Hello everyone,

First solution (verified)

Thanks to Peter-B who shared a solution provided by a Adobe employee in another thread, here's the first fix (works for both Windows and MacOS) :

  • Close Photoshop
  • Create a text file an save this as PSUserConfig.txt
  • Add 'PresetSync 0' to PSUserConfig.txt and save the file.
  • Move PSUserConfig.txt to the Photoshop Settings 2021 folder.
  • For MacOS : Open the finder and go by the menu to go/go to folder and type:  ~/library/Preferences/ --> There you will see the folder Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings.
  • For Windows : go to Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop [version]\Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings
  • Open the Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings folder and place there the PSUserConfig.txt file.
  • If the PSUserConfig.txt already exists, copy the file to a safe place, then place the new. The PSUserConfig.txt file with the PresetSync 0 rule, will force preset sync OFF.
  • Restart Photoshop. After restarting Photoshop, it should be possible to work with Ps 22.2.

Second solution (to be tested)

If, like me, you worry about the long-term fix and what causes the issue, I think I found it out. I reinstalled Windows two days ago. After reinstalling Windows, the memory leak caused by Preset Syncing option was gone. Today, I renamed my PC in Windows settings with the name I'm used to keep onto my succesive computers (and the name my computer had before reinstalling the OS). After restart, boom, the Preset Syncing option was back, as well as its memory leak. Ultimately, it seems that the option is tied to the computer's name. Changing back my computer's name to anything else caused the Preset Syncing option to be unchecked.

Thus, I would advise to try renaming your computer to see if the option is gone at PS launch. It may be preventing eventual future bugs with the Preset Syncing option forced to off via the first solution, as with this solution you simply simulate a new computer towards Creative Cloud.
