Print setting help needed

Using Photoshop CC 14.0 x 64 on Mac and a Canon MG7150 as printer.

Previously, I had no major problems printing e.g. photos on glossy photo paper. The results were more or less as on my computer screens.

I don't know what has happened (probably it's me who has messed with the settings...), but the past 5-6 months, it's impossible to get it right and since it's a gazillion different setting options, I haven't a clue where to begin getting this right.

Are there some basic, default settings in PS and the Mac where I can start? For instance, CMYK or RGB? Let PS or the printer set color management? Which print profiles are to be preferred? Or should I re-calibrate my Mac screens to begin with?

Cheers!

Thanks Per!

Your suggestions are exactly the settings I used before creating this thread. I still use them.

However, I went through all the printer's (i.e. not in PS but in the Canon printer/scanner) settings and found a "reset everything" option which I hit. Lo and behold: that did the trick! Now, the print-outa are perfect again.

Thanks again (and now I have to fins a way to make this thread "solved"...)

Cheers

  • Unless you recently calibrated your screen, recalibrate, preferably with a hardware calibrator.
  • Always work in RGB. Although inkjet printers are CMYK devices, they do their own conversion to CMYK, and expect to be fed RGB files.
  • Let Photoshop manage colors, and make sure to turn off color management in the printer driver. Having color management enabled in both may lead to a magenta cast, or generally wrong colors.
  • In the Photoshop print dialog, choose the correct printing profile for the paper/printer combination. Also make sure to set the correct paper type in the Canon printer driver. If you're using non-Canon paper, you may have to experiment with the paper type setting.
